Winter Fuel Payments Restored for Pensioners After Government U-Turn

Pensioners set to benefit as Winter Fuel Payments return; Police issue fresh warning after ATM scams target locals

Tuesday, 10th June

Good Morning Reader,

There’s never a dull moment in Broxbourne! As word spreads—even into the City of London—about how good we’ve got it here, it’s clear we’re lucky to call this place home. With interest rates starting to drop, the housing market could soon be buzzing. With change coming to Waltham Cross’s it can only be a good thing for the entire borough. Of course, Cheshunt’s roadworks are still keeping drivers on their toes (hang in there, everyone!).

Not all the news is rosy, though—Herts Police are warning about ATM scams, so it’s worth being extra careful when you’re out and about. Meanwhile, I’ve had lots of requests for young professional networking events—turns out, we all like a good wine, a chat, and some fresh connections. Keep an eye out; I’ll be sharing more details soon.

With Father’s Day just around the corner, if you want to go beyond the classic socks and boxers, how about taking Dad to the Men’s Shed at Cedars Park? It’s a brilliant midweek spot for friendly chat and hands-on projects—guaranteed to put a smile on his face.

News at a Glance

Winter Fuel Payments Restored for Pensioners After Government U-Turn

Pensioners in Broxbourne with annual incomes of £35,000 or less will see their Winter Fuel Payments restored this winter, following a major government reversal after weeks of uncertainty and public backlash.

The payments, which help pensioners cover energy bills in colder months, will now be available to around nine million pensioners across England and Wales. Those earning above the income threshold will have the payment recovered through their tax, while eligible pensioners can also choose to opt out.

Broxbourne MP Lewis Cocking has been a strong advocate for reinstating the payments, pressing the government to rethink the policy after the controversial cut earlier this year. The cut was widely criticised by voters, and this change will be welcome news for many local pensioners who faced an anxious wait.

While questions remain about how the additional costs will be covered, the government has promised it will not require permanent extra borrowing. For now, eligible pensioners in Broxbourne have something to smile about as winter approaches.

Broxbourne Residents Warned as Thieves Target Local ATMs

Police are urging residents across Hertfordshire to be extra cautious when using cash machines, following a surge in thefts from ATMs reported by banks in nearby areas, including Borehamwood, Hemel Hempstead, and Watford.

Over 100 cases have been recorded where customers believed their withdrawal had been cancelled, but the cash was later stolen from the machine. According to Detective Inspector Pete Hanks from the Serious Fraud and Cyber Unit, criminals are placing discreet devices inside ATM cash slots. These devices trap the cash, making it look like the transaction was declined, allowing thieves to retrieve the money after the customer walks away.

Police Advice:

  • Always inspect the ATM before use.

  • If anything looks unusual or tampered with—especially around the card slot or cash dispenser—do not use the machine.

  • Shield your hand when entering your PIN.

  • If your card or cash isn’t returned, or if anything suspicious happens, call your bank and the police immediately.

Contact:

If you encounter any issues at a cash machine, report it to your bank straight away and call the police on 101 (non-emergency).

Stay alert and help protect yourself and others from ATM scams!

On Sunday, Cedars Park was buzzing with energy and colour as Broxbourne’s Big Green Festival 2025 transformed the borough into a lively hub of eco-friendly fun and local pride. In collaboration with the Council’s sustainability team, the festival brought together local businesses, charities, performers, and families for a day all about celebrating the green movement.

Visitors jumped into hands-on workshops, with a fascinating Wild Edges Permaculture presentation sparking fresh ideas for sustainable gardening. The Hertford Swift Group shared inspiring conservation stories, while non-stop entertainment kept the crowd in high spirits.

Singer Lewis Sycamore opened the festival stage with soulful sounds, followed by the powerhouse vocals of Summer Georgie and a vibrant performance by the talented Valle Academy students. The eco-quiz drew plenty of eager participants, and the music didn’t stop—ALS GRIFFS, TAI, MANAE, and T.Y. all kept the energy sky-high.

To top it all off, Steel Pan In Motion from Waltham Cross closed the event with infectious Caribbean rhythms, leaving festival-goers dancing as the sun finally broke through after Saturday’s rain.
