News at Glance
Employment Rights Bill: Will It Boost Workers or Burden Small Businesses?
After the recent parliamentary discussion on the Employment Rights Bill, we took a closer look to weigh its potential effects on Broxbourne residents and local businesses. On one hand, the bill provides low-paid workers with benefits like guaranteed hours, compensation for shift changes, and flexible working arrangements. This could offer financial stability for many local workers.
However, the MP for Broxbourne Lewis Cocking opposed the bill, citing concerns about the burden it might place on small businesses. He argued that the direct impact on Small businesses is that they will close and people will lose their jobs. Many local Small Businesses rely on flexible staffing, and the new rules could raise costs and complicate operations. For sectors like retail and hospitality in Broxbourne, which often operate on tight margins, this could be particularly challenging.
While the bill brings significant worker protections, it’s important to balance these gains with potential economic impacts on small businesses, especially in local areas like Broxbourne. No good protecting the workers and lose the businesses providing employment. Also no good protecting the businesses and leaving the workers with less rights on flexible working arrangements, etc.

Arsenal 1 | 0 Shakhtar Donetsk
Arsenal bounced back from their weekend defeat to Bournemouth with a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, thanks to an own goal by Shakhtar goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk. Gabriel Martinelli's shot hit the post and deflected off Riznyk before crossing the line. Arsenal dominated early but faced injury concerns, including Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori. Leandro Trossard missed a late penalty, while Pedrinho almost equalized for Shakhtar in stoppage time, only to be denied by Arsenal keeper David Raya. Arsenal now turn their focus to facing Liverpool on Sunday.

The Moment Between Stations
It was just another chilly morning, as I boarded the train at Bishop's Stortford heading toward Stratford. Like every commuter, I slipped into the rhythm of the ride—headphones in, staring blankly out the window as the train rumbled through the familiar stops. Then, at Broxbourne, she appeared. A woman in her mid-twenties, I guessed, with bright eyes and a smile that seemed to light up the train. She stepped in with a burst of energy, laughing at something on her phone, and suddenly, the monotonous commute felt different.
I couldn’t help but watch, not in a creepy way, but out of curiosity. Her laughter wasn’t the usual polite chuckle you hear on public transport. It was genuine, carefree, and infectious. People around her began to smile, though none seemed to know what she was laughing about. And neither did I, but I knew I wanted to find out.
Just before we hit Tottenham Hale, I gathered the courage to speak. “The joke must be good,” I said, trying to sound casual. She looked up from her phone, eyes meeting mine, and smiled wider than before.
“Maybe,” she teased, her laughter still lingering. “But you probably wouldn’t get it.” Her tone was playful, and for a moment, it felt like we were the only two people in the packed carriage.
“Try me,” I pressed, leaning slightly forward. “I could use a laugh on this dreary morning.”
She hesitated, glancing at her phone before shaking her head with another soft chuckle. “It’s silly, really. You don’t want to hear it.”
Before I could say anything more, the train began to slow. Tottenham Hale. I suddenly realized I might not have much time left. The doors slid open, and she stood up, throwing her bag over her shoulder. She paused for a moment, as if deciding whether to say something more, but instead, she gave me one last smile as she stepped onto the platform.
I sat there, watching her disappear into the crowd, and suddenly regretted not asking for her name or number. The train pulled away, and I was left wondering—had I missed my chance?
Now, every morning, I look for her. If you're reading this, maybe we can pick up where we left off. I’m still curious about that joke, and I know a great spot for coffee near Stratford.
Word of the Day
BETWIXT
Today’s Word of the Day is BETWIXT - an old English word meaning "between" or "in the middle of."
How to use it:
It is often used in literary or poetic contexts to describe something occurring or situated between two things, such as places, times, or states of being. For example, "betwixt dawn and dusk" would refer to the period between sunrise and sunset.
Though considered archaic, it can still be used for stylistic effect in modern writing, often to evoke an older or more formal tone.
