WORD OF THE DAY

EMANCIPATION

Today’s Word of the Day is EMANCIPATION - means the act of setting someone free from legal, social, or political restrictions. It’s most commonly used when talking about liberation from slavery, oppression, or any situation where people’s rights are limited.

  • Historical context:
“Emancipation” is often linked to history, especially the abolition of slavery. For example:

    • “The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 to free enslaved people in the United States.”

  • General context:
It can also be used for other forms of freedom:

    • “Women’s emancipation in the early 20th century led to the right to vote.”

    • “He fought for the emancipation of his people from colonial rule.”

  • Legal context (modern):
Sometimes used for legal freedom, like when a teenager becomes legally independent from their parents:

    • “At age 16, she sought emancipation from her parents.”

Example Sentences

  • “The emancipation of slaves was a turning point in history.”

  • “Many activists dedicated their lives to the emancipation of oppressed groups.”

  • “After years of struggle, the country finally achieved emancipation from foreign control.”

Let me know if you want more examples or how to use it in a sentence!
