A Look Back at 2024 and Forward to 2025 with Broxtown

As we wrap up 2024, let’s reflect on the incredible journey of Broxtown, your trusted local newsletter, and the milestones we’ve achieved together since our launch on September 22, 2024. It’s been a whirlwind of stories, events, and shared moments, and we couldn’t have done it without you, our loyal readers.

September: Our First Steps

In our debut edition, we shared the history of Broxbourne and why we started this newsletter—to bring the community closer and keep everyone informed.

We reported on the cancellation of the Love Cheshunt Open Air Cinema, which dampened spirits of residents but gave us hope for a successful event in 2025. We also covered the residents feedback following the commissioning of Grundy Park. We missed the grand opening by a few weeks. We covered some environmental concerns in our first editorial on the Google Data Centre and its impact on River Lea. We are still awaiting Google’s response on the issue raised. If you have their ears please get in touch, we want to talk to them.

From tragic events at Cheshunt Station to the chaotic Tesco refurbishment, September set the stage for us to deliver news that matters.

October: Celebrating and Debating

In October, we highlighted Black History Month, though we noted limited events in the borough. The Northern Lights unexpectedly graced our skies, delighting residents and social media alike.

The job fair co-hosted by Google and the council was a standout success, while Halloween festivities dominated community events. Traffic gridlock and debates on local budget issues also captured the attention of residents, sparking lively discussions on the streets and in Westminster - thanks to MP Lewis Cocking.

November: Honouring Heroes and Raising Questions

In November we started the campaign to celebrate Broxbourne’s unsung heroes - with nominations flying in instantly. We reported a heartfelt tribute during Remembrance Weekend, with the Cheshunt procession taking centre stage.

We covered the challenges of Homebase’s collapse, the announcement of devolution plans, and the upcoming changes to the 242 bus route, all of which sparked conversations about Broxbourne’s future.

December: Celebrating Community and Looking Ahead

In December, we shone a spotlight on local talent with an editorial by our youth correspondent on misinformation, sparking meaningful discussions among parents. We also reviewed two fantastic local restaurants, launched a campaign to find the borough’s most popular dog breed, and announced the Broxtown Community Champion, celebrating those who’ve made a difference.

Amid the festive season, we shared updates on local Christmas activities and reported on Hertfordshire councils rejecting a unitary authority proposal.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we step into the new year, we’re filled with optimism and plans to make Broxtown even better. From more engaging stories to community initiatives, our goal remains the same: to keep you informed and connected.

We’d love your help in growing this community—share this newsletter with friends and neighbors, and let’s make Broxtown the heart of our borough’s conversations.

Here’s to a vibrant 2025 together!

NEWS AT A GLANCE

Homebase Secures Future: Waltham Cross Store Here to Stay

Following its collapse into administration last month, Homebase has been given a new lease on life as CDS Superstores, the parent company of The Range and Wilko, has acquired 70 stores, including the Waltham Cross location.

CDS plans to revitalize the brand by converting these stores into The Range Superstores while maintaining a strong Homebase presence with features like "Garden Centres by Homebase" and "Kitchens by Homebase." The transformation begins with new locations opening in Glasgow, Bournemouth, and Birmingham on January 17, 2025, with plans to roll out up to 10 revamped stores per month throughout the year.

By the end of 2025, CDS aims to fully transition all 70 locations, creating up to 1,600 jobs. For now, the Waltham Cross store will continue operating as usual during the transition, offering residents continued access to their favorite retailer under its evolving format.

This development ensures that Homebase’s legacy continues, both in-store and online, under its new ownership. The only question now is, what happens to the fire-sale going on at the moment? How will they restock? Well, whatever happens we are glad that Homebase is staying.

POSSIBLE FUTURE

A Vision for Tourism and Community Growth in Broxbourne

When I started Broxtown in September, my goal was simple: to connect our community through stories, news, and shared experiences. As someone who has lived here for 12 years, I’m constantly discovering the incredible history and hidden treasures that make our borough unique. The more I learn, the more I believe that Broxbourne has untapped potential to become a destination for tourists—not just from London, but from across the globe.

Tourism isn’t just about visitors; it’s about fostering pride in our heritage, supporting local businesses, and creating a thriving local economy. As I’ve explored our borough, I’ve uncovered a wealth of landmarks that deserve to be celebrated far beyond our borders. Let me take you on a journey through some of these incredible sites and share why I think they hold the key to Broxbourne’s future.

Theobalds Park and Cedars Park

Did you know that Theobalds Park was once a royal palace built by King James I in the 17th century? It hosted lavish feasts and celebrations for the monarch and his court. Today, Cedars Park, located on the former palace grounds, retains elements of its Tudor and Stuart grandeur, from 17th-century walls to archaeological remains of one of England’s grandest palaces. These parks are not just green spaces—they’re living history waiting to be explored.

Hoddesdon High Street and The Clock Tower

Walking down Hoddesdon High Street is like stepping back in time. Its charming timber-framed buildings and cobbled streets remind us of the borough’s days as a bustling market town. At its centre stands The Clock Tower, a symbol of Victorian innovation that once served as both a timekeeper and the town’s first police station. These landmarks showcase how Broxbourne has balanced tradition with progress over the centuries.

Industrial Ingenuity: Mylne Aqueduct and Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills

The Mylne Aqueduct and Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills highlight Broxbourne’s contributions to Britain’s industrial history. The aqueduct, part of the Lee Navigation canal system, is an engineering marvel from the 18th century, while the Gunpowder Mills played a crucial role in British military history. These sites offer a unique blend of heritage and intrigue, perfect for curious minds.

Sacred Spaces: St. Augustine’s Church and Emma’s Well

St. Augustine’s Church, with its origins dating back to the 12th century, and Emma’s Well, a medieval holy site, remind us of the borough’s spiritual and cultural significance. These sites are not only architectural masterpieces but also windows into the lives of those who shaped our community.

Architectural Treasures: Rawdon House and The Baas

From the Jacobean elegance of Rawdon House to the medieval charm of The Baas, these buildings tell stories of explorers, merchants, and everyday life in centuries past. They offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship and artistry that defined their eras.

Why Tourism Matters

Bringing attention to these landmarks isn’t just about celebrating the past; it’s about building our future. Tourism can drive revenue to local businesses, create jobs, and support the preservation of these incredible sites. Imagine guided tours, events in our historic parks, and local shops bustling with visitors eager to experience Broxbourne’s charm.

I may not have all the answers, but I believe in the power of community. To make this vision a reality, we need your stories, your knowledge, and your enthusiasm. If you’re a local historian, business owner, or just someone who loves our borough, let’s work together to put Broxbourne on the map.

As we step into 2025, let’s embrace our heritage and share it with the world. Together, we can build a tourism economy that benefits us all while keeping the spirit of Broxbourne alive for generations to come.
