Mayor's First Podcast Appearance and Last Day in Office
Before stepping down, Cllr McDaid sat down for an exclusive interview; High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Visits Broxbourne

Tuesday, 13th May
Good Morning Reader,
Did you get a chance to soak up the sunshine over the weekend? With temperatures in the mid-twenties and skies staying clear, it’s starting to feel like summer’s arrived early — and we’re definitely not complaining. Whether you dusted off the BBQ or just enjoyed the warmth, it’s been a welcome change. Of course, it does make us pause and wonder: is this just a lucky spell or a subtle reminder of bigger climate shifts? Either way, let’s make the most of it while it lasts.
On this day in 1912, the Royal Flying Corps — now the Royal Air Force — was established. And in 1995, Alison Hargreaves became the first woman to climb Mount Everest without oxygen or Sherpa support. A powerful reminder to do something today that your future self will thank you for.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the outgoing Mayor of Broxbourne, who reflected on her year in office, her hopes for the borough, and the legacy she leaves behind.
Also, if you've ever wondered who the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire is and what they actually do — you’re not alone. I was in the same boat, but now I’ve got the answers. And if you're curious too, you’ll want to keep reading.

High Sheriff of Hertfordshire Visits Broxbourne

Broxbourne recently welcomed Nicholas Buxton, the newly appointed High Sheriff of Hertfordshire (2025–2026), during an official visit to the borough. He was received by local leaders, including the Mayor, and toured key sites such as Lowewood Museum, Goffs Oak Community Library, Rivers ESC, Cedars Park, and the Council offices.

The High Sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown, serving as the King’s representative for matters of law and order in the county. While largely ceremonial today, the role supports judges, police, and community initiatives.
Mr. Buxton’s visit highlighted the borough’s community spirit and the continued importance of civic engagement.

🚫 Broxbourne Renews Warning Against Grass Verge Parking – Debate Grows Over Fines vs. Awareness

Broxbourne Borough Council has renewed its message to drivers: please do not park on grass verges. The reminder comes as part of an ongoing social media campaign aimed at deterring the behaviour, which causes damage to green spaces and leads to costly repairs.
“Parking on verges causes unnecessary damage,” the council stated. “We’re urging residents and visitors to park responsibly and help protect our environment.”
While the digital campaign has reached many residents online, some critics argue that awareness alone may not be enough. Local voices suggest that issuing fines would act as a stronger deterrent and help enforce long-term behaviour change.
The council has yet to confirm whether enforcement measures will be introduced, but the campaign continues to gain visibility across the borough’s digital platforms.
📢 What do you think—should fines be introduced, or is awareness enough? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

MP Highlights Key Local Concerns Following Broxbourne Surgery

Broxbourne MP Lewis Cocking has reaffirmed his commitment to tackling local concerns following a recent constituency surgery held at the council offices. Among the key issues raised by residents were overdevelopment, planning frustrations, GP access, and the ongoing disruption caused by roadworks on the A1170.
Sharing his own experience of being delayed by traffic on the A1170 en route to the surgery, the MP acknowledged the widespread frustration and said it was a shared inconvenience. “Like you, I’m incredibly frustrated by the current roadworks. They impact me as much as anyone else in Broxbourne,” he said.
Mr. Cocking continues to hold regular surgeries across the constituency and encourages residents to get in touch. Constituents can contact his office at @parliament.uk or by calling 01992 845335 for support or to raise concerns.
📚 SATs Begin Today for Year 6 Pupils
Yesterday marked the start of KS2 SATs for Year 6 children across Hertfordshire — an important milestone in their learning journey. While these tests help schools measure progress, it’s important to remember they’re just one part of a much bigger picture.
As parents and carers, your support makes all the difference. Here are a few simple ways to help at home this week:
✅ Encourage, don’t pressure – A kind “Just do your best” is powerful
✅ Stick to routines – A good night’s sleep and breakfast go a long way
✅ Keep evenings calm – Light activities, hobbies, and rest help reduce stress
✅ Celebrate effort – However they do, praise their hard work
Remember: SATs don’t define your child. This week is about showing resilience, not perfection. If you have any concerns or questions, reach out to your school — they’re here to help.
Let’s cheer on our Year 6 pupils — you’ve got this! 👏

Jo represents women who are diagnosed later in life, offering powerful insight into neurodiversity from a personal and professional perspective.
Aired last night at 9pm on BBC Two and available on BBC iPlayer, the episode highlights the unique ways neurodivergent minds work, as participants create expressive films to share how they experience the world.

WORD OF THE DAY
FESTER
Today’s Word of the Day is FESTER means to become worse or more intense over time, especially when referring to feelings, problems, or wounds that are left untreated or unaddressed.
Usage:Emotional/figurative use:
Feelings or problems
When you keep anger or sadness inside and don’t talk about it, it can fester and make you feel worse.
Example: She didn’t tell anyone she was upset, and the bad feelings started to fester.
Infections or wounds
If a cut or sore is not cleaned or treated, it can become infected — it festers.
Example: His cut began to fester because he didn’t take care of it.
