From the County Council
Majority of Hertfordshire Children Secure Preferred School Places
Yesterday, parents up and down the borough go the messages which they have been anticipating for a while about which secondary schools their brilliant kids will go to. Nearly 94% of Hertfordshire children have been allocated a place at one of their preferred secondary or upper schools, with 76% securing their first-choice school. Out of 14,703 applications, most families received confirmation via email or post by midday yesterday, Monday 3 March.
Councillor Caroline Clapper, Executive Member for Education, praised the allocation process, emphasising Hertfordshire schools' strong performance and encouraging parents to explore allocated schools before making decisions. Families not offered their first preference have been placed on a continuing interest list and can appeal by 31 March 2025.

Hertfordshire Launches Herts Card for Free School Meal Families
Hertfordshire County Council has introduced the Herts Card, offering families of children eligible for free school meals discounts at shops, sports clubs, and activity centers. The card aims to remove financial barriers and provide more opportunities for children to engage in local activities.
The initiative builds on the success of the HAND card, previously used by SEND families, and now extends discounts to a wider group. Eligible families will be contacted with sign-up details, while local businesses are encouraged to join the scheme.
In addition, HAPpy activity camps return this Easter, providing free holiday programs and meals for children receiving free school meals. Booking opens on March 13.
