From the County Council
Hertfordshire Leader Responds to Local Government Reform

Cllr Richard Roberts, Leader of Hertfordshire County Council, has addressed the Government’s plans to reorganise two-tier areas into single-tier unitary authorities. Roberts emphasised his commitment to maintaining Hertfordshire as a thriving place to live and work, while prioritising residents and businesses. He acknowledged challenges like financial pressures but stressed the need to balance service delivery with preparing new council structures.
Roberts highlighted collaboration among Hertfordshire’s 11 councils and the Police and Crime Commissioner to develop reform proposals. Initial plans are due by March, with full proposals in November, but May elections will proceed as planned. Hertfordshire did not seek to delay elections or fast-track devolution, aiming to preserve local democracy and build consensus.
Roberts’ approach balances caution with proactive engagement, focusing on protecting services and ensuring accountability. Broxtown will provide further updates as the reforms progress.

COUNCIL UPDATES
Updates to Social Housing Allocation Policy Approved
The Council has announced changes to its Housing Allocations Policy, which governs how social housing is allocated and who can join the Housing Register. Following a public consultation in September 2024, feedback from Housing Register applicants and the general public was carefully considered.
The updated Policy, now approved by Councillors, is set to be implemented in 2025. Current Housing Register applicants will be informed about the changes and how they may impact their applications. However, the Council has clarified that specific details on how the new Policy will affect individual applications cannot be provided until it comes into effect.
This update aims to ensure a fair and transparent process for social housing allocation in the Borough. Further communications will be shared as the implementation date approaches.
