News at Glance
Hertfordshire County Council Urges Flood Preparedness: Are You Ready?
With recent heavy rains, Hertfordshire County Council is calling on residents to take Flood Action Week (14-20 October) seriously and ensure they are prepared for potential flooding.
Knowing who to contact in a flood is crucial. The Environment Agency monitors rivers and issues flood alerts, while Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service handles life-threatening situations. If floodwaters threaten homes or businesses, it's up to homeowners, landlords, and business owners to protect their properties. Flooded streets and pavements are managed by Hertfordshire County Councilās Highways Service, while water companies oversee public sewers.
Recovering from a flood can be daunting, but help is available. The National Flood Forum offers essential advice on getting back on your feet.

āRescue Your Wasteā: Broxbourne Borough Launches Recycle Week Campaign
As we become more conscious of our environmental impact, one simple question remains: Are you putting your waste in the right bin? This week, Broxbourne Borough Council is urging residents to step up their recycling efforts with their new campaign, āRescue Meā, reminding us that proper recycling begins at home.
Running throughout the week, the campaignās theme focuses on the importance of choosing the correct bin for every item. Far too often, recyclable materials end up in landfill due to confusion over which bin to use, and this campaign aims to fix that. Itās a call to action for all residents to give their recyclables a second chance at life.
If youāre unsure of where certain items should go, donāt worry! Broxbourne Borough Council has made it easy to get on track. Simply follow the link below to access a helpful guide on recycling in the borough: Recycling in Broxbourne.
Letās keep Broxbourne clean and sustainable by making smarter choices when we recycle. Rescue your waste, and together, we can make a difference.

Watch Out for Wildlife: Stay Safe on Hertfordshire Roads During Deer Rutting Season
As autumn sets in, so does the deer rutting season in Hertfordshire. This is a crucial time for many deer species, but it also brings potential danger for both animals and drivers. With deer more likely to cross highways during this period, Hertfordshire Highways is urging all road users to take extra care when driving.
Drivers are encouraged to stay alert, reduce speed in rural areas, and watch for any signs of wildlife near roads. Letās all do our part to protect these beautiful creatures and keep our roads safe this autumn.
Stay cautious and help keep Hertfordshireās roads and wildlife safe.

Thomas Tuchel Set to Become New England Manager
Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is set to take over as the next England men's football manager, becoming the third non-British permanent coach in the team's history, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. Tuchel will replace Gareth Southgate, who resigned after England's Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.
Interim manager Lee Carsley will remain in charge for England's last two Nations League matches in November, with Tuchel expected to take over soon after. His main goal will be leading the team through the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Tuchel, 51, brings extensive experience from managing top clubs like Chelsea, PSG, and Bayern Munich, where he won multiple trophies, including the Champions League with Chelsea.
Tuchel's formal announcement is expected this week at Wembley.

A Morning Connection on the Broxbourne Train
Thereās something about the morning commuteāa sea of familiar faces, yet no one really stands out. As a guy, you blend into the crowd. Itās the ladies who often catch our attention, effortlessly turning a routine train ride into something a bit more interesting. Most mornings, I sit back and appreciate the beauty of the everyday hustleāuntil one morning changed all of that.
It was just another ride, the train sitting unusually long at Broxbourne, heading toward Liverpool Street. I was lost in thought, watching the quiet shuffle of passengers, when suddenly, a burst of laughter filled the carriage. The kind of laughter that makes you want to know the story behind it. I looked up, and there she wasāhead thrown back in delight, her smile lighting up the entire platform. And thatās when it happenedāour eyes met.
I donāt know what came over me, but in that split second, something clicked. A connection, maybe? As she composed herself, I did what any decent guy wouldāsmiled back. You know, acknowledging the moment. The train had just started moving, and I couldnāt let it end there. āThe joke must be that good. Care to share?ā I quipped, trying to sound casual.
She hesitated, her laughter still lingering, but I pressed on, āGo onā¦ I could use a good laugh.ā She laughed even more, the kind that makes you forget youāre sitting in a crowded train. After a moment, she said, āYou probably wonāt like it. Itās nothing, really.ā But I knew there was something more behind that smile.
Just as I thought we were getting somewhere, the train pulled into Waltham Cross, and before I knew it, she stood up to leave. My heart sank a littleāI thought I had more time. She stepped off, but not before giving me one last look. A look that told me Iād made an impression, just like she had on me.
Now, here I am, wondering if sheās out there somewhere, remembering our brief but unforgettable exchange. If youāre reading this, and you think it was you, letās grab a coffee sometimeāwhether itās in Broxbourne or Waltham Cross, Iāll leave it up to you. And hey, if youāre single and looking for something real, I think weāve already got a head start.
