Hertfordshire Councils Begin Consultation on Local Government Future

Hertfordshire's 11 councils have launched the first phase of engagement with key strategic partners to shape proposals for the future of local government across the county.

The initial consultation involves NHS representatives, police, education leaders, major employers and voluntary and community sector groups. This phase focuses on exploring the principles and opportunities of potential options while gathering input on how future changes could improve local services.

Councillor Corina Gander, Leader of Broxbourne Council, emphasized the importance of strategic partner engagement in shaping early thinking on local government's future. She confirmed that residents and the wider community will have their opportunity to participate in September, when clearer proposals are expected to emerge.

"My main aim is to ensure that the council of the future has Broxbourne's residents and businesses firmly at its heart," said Councillor Gander. She described the process as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the future of our Borough."

A second phase of engagement will be launched in the coming months, providing residents and wider stakeholders with opportunities to learn about potential options, ask questions, and share their views directly. Details of these engagement opportunities will be announced closer to the time.

The councils are also planning significant engagement with their workforces during this period. Final proposals must be submitted to the government by 28 November 2025.

MP Lewis Cocking Marks One Year in Office

Lewis Cocking MP

Lewis Cocking MP has marked his first anniversary as Broxbourne's Member of Parliament by reflecting on his achievements over the past 12 months and outlining his plans for the future.

The MP has spent the year conducting surgeries and handling casework for constituents, while promising to expand his community engagement efforts. He is actively encouraging residents to approach him with community issues they would like him to raise in Parliament.

Marking the milestone, Cocking described his election as "the honour of my life" and emphasized his connection to the constituency, calling Broxbourne "the place I call home."

The MP stressed that his work is far from over, urging residents to sign up to his newsletter to stay informed about his ongoing activities. Those interested can subscribe at lewiscocking.uk/newsletter to keep up with his parliamentary work and community initiatives.

Council Seeks Public Input on New Planning Guidance

Broxbourne Borough Council has launched a public consultation on its draft Residential Design and Amenity Supplementary Planning Guidance, inviting residents and developers to share their views until 23 July 2025.

The new guidance aims to help applicants understand what types of residential developments are likely to gain planning approval, covering everything from new homes to household alterations. The document provides clear, illustrated advice on design principles to ensure developments are well-designed, complement surrounding buildings, and protect neighbours' privacy and outlook.

The guidance covers internal space standards for new residential developments, including requirements for gross internal floor areas and private amenity space such as garden and garage sizes. It also addresses alterations to existing homes, including garage conversions, outbuildings, annexes, and driveways.

The council is encouraging householders and other interested parties to review the draft guidance and submit comments to help shape the final version. All feedback received during the consultation period will be considered before the document is adopted.

The consultation runs from 25 June to 23 July 2025, with submissions accepted through the council's website at www.haveyoursay.broxbourne.gov.uk.

Broxbourne Councillors Support Local Causes with £800 in Community Grants

Two Broxbourne councillors have donated £800 to local community projects as part of Hertfordshire County Council's Locality Budget scheme.

Councillor Dee Hart (Waltham Cross) has awarded £500 to Cheshunt and District Royal British Legion to create a new community garden with planting and a flowering pagoda. The project will improve the outdoor space for multiple community groups using the club, promoting health and wellbeing among residents.

"This is a great community garden project helping to support the health and wellbeing of residents," said Councillor Hart, who plans to visit the completed space.

Meanwhile, Councillor Paul Seeby (Cheshunt Central) has given £300 to Cheshunt Youth Inclusive FC to support inclusive football for children aged 7-14 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The funding will cover pitch costs, equipment, kits, and league fees for the club, which competes in the Hertfordshire Youth Inclusive League.

"I am happy to support this very worthwhile provision of inclusive football," said Councillor Seeby. The club provides a supportive environment where young players can learn at their own pace while making friends.

The grants are part of £11,717 distributed across Hertfordshire through the Locality Budget scheme, which has funded thousands of community projects since 2009.
