Broxbourne Borough Marks Holocaust Memorial Day and Genocide Remembrance

This year, Broxbourne Borough and Hertfordshire County Council commemorated the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 30th anniversary of the Bosnian genocide. A flag-raising ceremony outside Broxbourne Council offices honored victims of the Holocaust and genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

Cheshunt Library contributed by sharing a catalogue of books on genocide, encouraging reflection and education. Local police also participated, with Inspector Rachael Robertson emphasizing the importance of remembrance and community safety. She highlighted the police’s commitment to tackling hate crimes and supporting victims.

These events underscored the importance of remembering the past while fostering a future built on tolerance and unity. Together, the community reflected on history and renewed its pledge to stand against hatred.

Broxbourne Unites in Candlelit Tribute to Remember Holocaust Victims and Stand Against Hatred

As part of the national and local remembrance efforts, people across the country and throughout the Borough of Broxbourne participated in a deeply symbolic act of unity and reflection: lighting candles at 8 p.m. and placing them safely in their windows. This simple yet powerful gesture served as a collective tribute to the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust and other genocides, while also standing as a beacon of hope and resilience against prejudice and hatred in today’s world.

The act of lighting a candle is rich with meaning. It represents remembrance, honoring the memories of those who suffered and perished in some of history’s darkest moments. At the same time, the light symbolizes hope, resilience, and the enduring commitment to building a future free from bigotry and discrimination. By placing these candles in windows, individuals and families not only paid their respects but also sent a clear message to their communities: that they stand together against hatred and intolerance in all its forms.

This tradition, observed annually on Holocaust Memorial Day, brings people of all backgrounds together in a shared moment of reflection. It serves as a reminder that the lessons of the past must never be forgotten and that everyone has a role to play in challenging prejudice and promoting understanding. In Broxbourne, the sight of candles glowing in windows across the Borough created a powerful visual representation of solidarity, demonstrating that the community is united in its commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive world.

Broxbourne Launches Affordable Solar Energy Scheme for Residents

Worker installing solar panels on a roof

Broxbourne Borough has partnered with Solar Together to offer residents an affordable group-buying scheme for solar panels and battery storage. The initiative, part of the borough’s green commitment, aims to make renewable energy more accessible and help homeowners reduce reliance on the national grid.

The scheme, available via Solar Together Hertfordshire, includes solar panel installations, optional battery storage, EV charge points, and retrofit battery storage for existing solar users. Hertfordshire County Council is working with iChoosr to ensure a cost-effective and hassle-free transition to clean energy.

How It Works:

  1. Register: Homeowners sign up online for free, with no obligation.

  2. Auction: Approved suppliers compete in a reverse auction, offering competitive prices.

  3. Recommendation: Participants receive a personalized proposal.

  4. Installation: After a technical survey, installations are scheduled.

  5. Support: Help desks and information sessions guide residents through the process.

This scheme has the potential of empowering residents to reduce their carbon footprint and save on energy costs, supporting our commitment to a greener Broxbourne.
