News at a Glance
Charities Facing Rising Demand for Their Charitable Services
In a recent interview with Broxtown editor Emeka, Roxanne Lawrence, CEO of Teens Unite Fighting Cancer, shared that the Broxbourne-based charity is facing surging demand for support, while donations are falling behind.
“As the cost of living crisis deepens, more young people are turning to us for help,” Roxanne said. “Our services are completely free—but maintaining them is getting harder.”
She noted that this trend isn't unique to Teens Unite. As a member of a national coalition of charity CEOs, Roxanne confirmed that charities across the UK are seeing the same pressures: increased demand, reduced giving.
While the charity’s retail store provides some income through thrifted purchases, Roxanne urged the community to step in. “Even small donations can go a long way—especially now.”
🎧 Full interview with Roxanne coming soon on the Broxtown podcast.
Exclusive Preview: Teens Unite CEO Reveals Big Plans in Upcoming Podcast

We sat down with Roxanne Lawrence, CEO of Teens Unite Fighting Cancer, for a special preview of an upcoming podcast interview—and she dropped some exciting hints about the charity’s future.
Founded 18 years ago, this Broxbourne-based organisation supports young people (13–24) through every stage of their cancer journey. From creative workshops and career mentoring to life-changing retreats, Teens Unite helps survivors rebuild confidence and reclaim their futures.
💬 "Cancer doesn’t define these young people," says Roxanne. "We give them the tools to rediscover their strength—and dream big again."

🏰 400 Years Ago Yesterday: The King Who Died in Cheshunt

Yesterday marked 400 years since the death of King James VI and I, who took his final breath on March 27, 1625, at his favourite hunting lodge right here in Cheshunt.
The lodge—Theobalds Palace—once stood proudly on the grounds of what we now know as Cedars Park. A place many Cheshunt locals enjoy for family strolls and sunny afternoons was, four centuries ago, the royal retreat of one of Britain’s most significant monarchs.
King James VI of Scotland became James I of England and Ireland in 1603, uniting the crowns for the first time. He is perhaps best remembered for commissioning the King James Bible, one of the most influential texts in the English language. He was also known for his love of hunting, literature, and political philosophy.
After years of rule, King James chose to spend his final days at Theobalds—his favourite country residence. On March 27, 1625, he died within its walls, making Cheshunt the final chapter in the life of a king who helped shape the United Kingdom as we know it.
Today, Cedars Park stands as a peaceful reminder of Cheshunt’s royal past. With traces of the old palace still visible, it’s a quiet but powerful part of Broxbourne’s living history.
🕰️ 400 years on, few places can say a king lived—and died—where their children now play. Cheshunt can.

MOTHERS DAY POEM
A Mother’s Love
In every smile, in every tear,
You’ve been my strength, my guide, my cheer.
Through sleepless nights and long, full days,
You shaped my life in countless ways.
Your hands have held me when I cried,
Your voice, the calm when storms would rise.
You taught me kindness, truth, and grace,
With every hug, your warm embrace.
No crown or throne, yet still a queen,
In every quiet, in every scene.
You gave me roots, you gave me wings,
And filled my world with gentle things.
So here’s to you on this sweet day,
For all you are, in every way.
No gift could ever quite convey—
The love I feel this Mother’s Day. 💐
