News at Glance

Broxtown Launches Initiative to Recognise Unsung Community Heroes

In an effort to shine a spotlight on some of the community's unsung heroes, Broxtown has announced a new initiative to celebrate those who make a lasting impact in Broxbourne. From business owners and volunteers to local taxi drivers who go above and beyond, these individuals often work tirelessly behind the scenes without public recognition, though their contributions are felt by many.

Emeka Ogbonnaya, the founder of Broxtown, believes it’s time to make annual recognition of these remarkable individuals a tradition. Together with his team, he has launched the Broxbourne Borough Community Champion Award, an annual celebration that will honour the top three individuals who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to the community. The winners will be selected through a community voting process after nominations close.

If you know someone who deserves this recognition—or if you feel you’ve contributed in a noteworthy way—follow the link below to learn more and submit your nomination.

Voting Opens for Broxbourne's Best Small Business Competition

Voting is now underway for Broxbourne's Best Small Business Competition, an initiative launched by Broxbourne Borough MP Lewis Cocking. After an enthusiastic response from the public, local residents have nominated businesses from across the borough that demonstrate excellence and community impact. Now, the final decision rests with the community as voting begins to crown the best small business in Broxbourne.

This competition aims to make annual recognition of local businesses a valued tradition, spotlighting the contributions they make to the community each year. Broxtown is fully supportive of this initiative, which honours the hard work and dedication of small businesses across the borough.

Tottenham Hotspurs 4 | 1 Aston Villa

Dominic Solanke scored twice as Tottenham staged a comeback to beat Aston Villa 4-1 in the Premier League. Morgan Rogers initially put Villa ahead, but Solanke's quick second-half double, along with goals from Brennan Johnson and a stoppage-time free-kick by James Maddison, secured Spurs’ win. The victory moves Tottenham up to seventh, closing in on the top four, while Villa missed the chance to move up to third.

Newcastle United 1 | 0 Arsenal

BBC Sport

Alexander Isak's early header secured a 1-0 win for Newcastle over Arsenal at St. James' Park. Despite Arsenal's strong start, they struggled to create chances after Isak’s goal, managing only one shot on target. The win lifts Newcastle to eighth, while Arsenal remains third, potentially eight points behind leaders Manchester City if City wins later in the day.

Local Hero Spotlight

As part of our Community Champion Award Spotlight series, each day we’ll highlight an unsung hero who has selflessly dedicated time and energy to making a difference in our community. Today, we’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Kev Orkian from Hertfordshire Studios.

Kev Orkian

Kev Orkian has been delighting audiences worldwide for over 30 years with a career spanning West End productions, international comedy tours, and performances at renowned comedy clubs. Beyond his work on stage, Kev is a visionary entrepreneur who has built four entertainment businesses and acquired two established brands, including the legendary Jongleurs Comedy Club. Each endeavor reflects his commitment to bringing communities together through live entertainment, creating spaces where performers and audiences can connect.

In January 2024, Kev opened Hertfordshire Studios in the heart of Hoddesdon, a vibrant creative hub he describes as a “house of creative visionaries.” Since its launch, Hertfordshire Studios has become a dynamic space for events, live performances, and creative collaborations. Looking forward to 2025, the studio will introduce exciting projects, including a membership platform for film and TV enthusiasts, casting rooms, green screen facilities, rehearsal spaces, the revived Jongleurs Comedy Club, seasonal pantomimes, free community concerts, kids’ workshops, and choir classes.

Hertfordshire Studios also fosters community bonds through unique gatherings like the weekly “Stitch and Bitch Club” on Tuesdays at 10:30 am, where local sewers come together to create costumes for Howlin Entertainment’s productions. Located in a historically significant building, Hertfordshire Studios now serves as a launchpad for emerging artists and creators under Kev’s guidance. His goal is to make this creative space accessible to everyone, empowering local visionaries to produce social media content, explore film and TV projects, and bring fresh ideas to life.
