News at a Glance

Broxbourne Approves 2025/26 Budget with Minimal Council Tax Rise

Broxbourne Borough Council has announced its 2025/26 budget, including a modest £5 annual Council Tax increase, bringing the charge for a Band D property to £163.24. This maintains Broxbourne’s position as the lowest council tax in Hertfordshire, over £60 cheaper than the next district.

The council retains only 7.4% of the tax collected, with 80.5% going to Hertfordshire County Council and 12.1% to the Police and Crime Commissioner. Despite challenges like rising National Insurance and living wage costs, the council has balanced the budget without cutting services, thanks to prudent financial planning.

Key investments include refurbishing John Warner Sports Centre and launching a new Adventure Golf facility at Cheshunt Park Golf Centre this summer. Small fee increases for discretionary services will ensure competitiveness.

Councillor Alexander Curtis praised the budget as "balanced, considered, and proportionate," reflecting the council’s strong financial position and commitment to delivering quality services and economic development.

Hertfordshire Approves £1 Billion Budget with Council Tax Rise for 2025/26

Hertfordshire County Council has agreed a £1 billion budget for 2025/26, including a 4.99% Council Tax increase, adding £1.62 per week for Band D properties. The rise addresses rising costs, inflation, and higher National Insurance contributions.

Key investments include £500 million for adult social care, £250 million for children’s services, and £100 million for highways maintenance. Additional funding will support care workers, vulnerable residents, and flood protection. The council also plans £42 million in internal savings to ease taxpayer burdens.

Council Leader Richard Roberts acknowledged economic challenges but emphasized prudent financial planning. The budget aims to protect essential services and ensure Hertfordshire remains resilient amid ongoing pressures.

Broxbourne MP Lewis Cocking Champions Family Businesses and Supports Local Entrepreneurs

Broxbourne MP Lewis Cocking has highlighted the importance of small and family businesses in boosting the local economy, while sharing his efforts to support them.

Speaking in Westminster, Cocking praised local entrepreneurs, saying, “I’m proud to represent a constituency with so many fantastic small businesses. They work hard, take risks, and create jobs, driving our economy forward.”

Last year, Cocking launched a Best Small Business Competition, which saw 30 businesses nominated and thousands of public votes cast. From shops and pubs to hairdressers and dog training schools, the competition celebrated Broxbourne’s diverse business community.

Cocking personally delivered certificates to nominees, listening to their concerns about economic challenges. In Parliament, he urged the Government to create policies that help small businesses thrive, saying, “We must do everything to encourage businesses to grow and succeed.”

Arsenal's Title Hopes Fade After Frustrating Draw

Nottingham Forest 0 | 0 Arsenal

Arsenal's slim Premier League title hopes took another hit with a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest. The result leaves them 13 points behind leaders Liverpool, who now seem set for a comfortable title run.

This follows a recent home defeat to West Ham and dropped points against Forest, marking a pivotal downturn in Arsenal's season. Despite dominating possession, the Gunners lacked a cutting edge, hampered by injuries to key players like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, and Kai Havertz.

Their best chances came from Riccardo Calafiori hitting the post and Mikel Merino's saved header. Forest, meanwhile, kept their Champions League hopes alive, sitting six points behind Arsenal.

With their attacking options depleted, Arsenal's title chase now looks all but over. Next stop, away to PSV, UEFA Champions League last 16.

Haaland Returns with a Goal as Manchester City Edge Past Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspurs 0 | 1 Manchester City

Erling Haaland marked his return with a goal, helping Manchester City secure a crucial 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur to boost their top-four hopes.

City started brightly, with Haaland opening the scoring in the 12th minute, slotting home Jeremy Doku's cross. Despite dominating the first half, City missed chances to extend their lead, with Savinho firing over and Matheus Nunes failing to find Omar Marmoush.

Tottenham improved after the break, testing City goalkeeper Ederson multiple times. Substitutes Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min added urgency, but Ederson denied Son a late equaliser.

Haaland thought he had a second goal in stoppage time, but it was ruled out for handball. Spurs' final chance fell to Pape Sarr, who headed over, sealing City's narrow victory.

Pep Guardiola admitted his side struggled in the second half, saying, "We suffered... but we will be back." The win keeps City firmly in the race for a Champions League spot. Next stop, away to AZ - last 16 Champions League.

Cheshunt Stun League Leaders Dartford with Tactical Masterclass

Cheshunt FC 3 | 0 Dartford

Cheshunt ended Dartford’s 21-match unbeaten league run with a well-earned 3-0 victory, denting Dartford’s title charge.

Dartford started strongly, with captain Samir Carruthers orchestrating attacks, but Cheshunt’s defence held firm. Keeper Preston Edwards made crucial saves, and the hosts struck first just before halftime. A corner flicked to the back post found Donell Thomas, who volleyed home from a tight angle.

Cheshunt adapted in the second half, doubling their lead when Kenny Coker tapped in a low cross for his fifth goal in five games. Top scorer Vas Vasiliou sealed the win with a penalty, his 13th league goal this season.

Despite Dartford’s late efforts, Cheshunt’s organised defence and tactical discipline saw them comfortably secure all three points. A statement win for the Ambers!

Next up: Cheshunt face another tough test tomorrow as they travel to Chatham Town. This away fixture will truly test their mettle as they look to build on this impressive result.
